You’ve Got A Friend In Me: Recovery Companions

Millions of both adults and children in America live with a mental health or behavioral health disorder of some kind. An estimated 23,000 people are living actively with an addiction to drugs and/or alcohol. Merely ten percent of those people will get the treatment and support they need. For those living with mental and behavioral health disorders, the percentages of those getting treatment are also small.

Feeling alone, or isolation, is one of the most common symptoms of not just mental and behavioral health issues, but of humanity. Though we live on a densely populated planet, we are quick to be convinced that we are completely and utterly alone- in our thoughts, our feelings, our personalities, and our life experiences. Loneliness is a prevalent and problematic issue in our world. Pervasive loneliness can lead to the development of many diseases and disorders, the worst of which culminating in an attempt at suicide. Feeling misunderstood, out of place, or ‘terminally’ unique in life can lead to a very painful experience of living.

When a loved one goes to treatment or receives any one of a number of treatment options, they quickly learn that they are not alone in their struggles. Among peers who have similar struggles in their lives, a loved one finds a community and a network of individuals to whom they can relate on intimate levels and turn to in times of personal need. Many people have to return home to their normal environments after treatment where perhaps they don’t feel as included and ‘a part of’ as they did in treatment. Combatting those feelings of loneliness and having someone to turn to in a moment of crisis is hard to do when nobody understands the distinct experience of living with a disorder, going to treatment for it, and being in recovery from it.
